George Sherman was presented with the Red Heart Award at the Firefighters For Healing annual Red Tie Gala on November 6, 2021.
Firefighters For Healing will open its Transitional Healing Center on the second floor of the Moment apartment tower developed by Sherman Associates, with completion planned for Q4 2022. The Transitional Healing Center will have 12 suites for injured firefighters and burn victims along with their families to reside in while burn survivors recover. The center will be the first of its kind in the United States and will be located one block away from Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“George Sherman, from Sherman Associates, was presented the 2021 Red Heart Award for his commitment to community, his compassion and for living the moment. George has played an integral role as a champion of the Transitional Healing Center which will be housed in the Moment apartment tower. For three years now, he has continually gone above and beyond to help us achieve our vision and continue our mission of serving families in need. He has been such a great communicator and connector who shares our values of Integrity, Compassion and Excellence,” said a Firefighters For Healing spokesperson.
Firefighters For Healing is an organization that was founded by a former Minneapolis firefighter, Jake LaFerriere, in 2010 after he suffered third and fourth degree burns as the result of a backdraft explosion. Firefighters For Healing provides support to burn survivor patients and helps firefighters and first responders pivot after an injury or medical diagnosis. Firefighters For Healing provides qualifying families from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin with emergency housing, grocery or toy hampers, gift cards for meals, gas, clothing and more.

{DES MOINES, IOWA, September 30, 2021}—Sherman Associates recently opened a regional office in Des Moines to better serve its multifamily, retail and office portfolio and future developments in the area. The office is located in Sherman’s new Gray’s Landing Office building at 220 Southwest 9th Street in the Gray’s Landing neighborhood, south of downtown Des Moines. The office building is the fourth property that has been developed by Sherman in Gray’s Landing, with upcoming projects in the pipeline.
Leading the regional office is Jackie Nickolaus, who was hired as a Senior Developer at Sherman Associates in May to focus on projects in Des Moines as well as other opportunities in Iowa and the surrounding states. Nickolaus is responsible for managing real estate development projects and determining funding requirements, while working collaboratively with several teams including legal, accounting, construction, and asset management.
With over 25 years of experience, Nickolaus brings expertise in financial analysis, development, and project implementation. Her unique background in complicated development projects and government processes stems from 10 years of experience at the City of Des Moines and allows her to provide great insight into government process and funding for Sherman projects. Nickolaus had a previous stint with Sherman from 2005 to 2014 as a Project Manager and then Vice President of Development.
Nickolaus holds a Master of Arts degree in Public Affairs with specialization in Community Economic Development and Planning from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Iowa.
Regional property management and compliance teams, along with Nickolaus, office out of the new location. Those teams support Sherman’s new construction multifamily and hotel developments in Gray’s Landing: The Edge, The Nexus, and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Des Moines Downtown; as well as multifamily and retail properties developed by Sherman in downtown Des Moines: The Randolph, Rumely Lofts, Metro Lofts, and Vine Street Lofts.
Other commercial tenants in the Gray’s Landing Office building include Estes Construction, Paragon IT Professionals, Table 128 and a Sherman-owned Starbucks.

The Central Iowa Water Trails project, which would transform 150 miles of waterways into a recreational amenity, is finally afloat.
The Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment on Wednesday approved a conditional use permit for transforming of a portion of the Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines into a whitewater course. Part of the project would include modifications to the Scott Avenue Dam at the confluence of the Des Moines and Racoon rivers.
While many approvals are yet to come — including permission for the dam modifications from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which regulates construction on all navigable waterways — the vote represents a significant step toward construction of the long-anticipated regional project. It is expected to generate more than $104.4 million in tourism dollars within five years of its opening.
No longer will the Iowa Bachelor look out on Court Avenue crowds: the mural has been replaced with one representing Iowa’s diversity.
The mural featuring Chris Soules, the reality TV show star of “The Bachelor” from Arlington, Iowa, graced the side of RoCA at 208 Court Ave. along with a quilt of other murals for five years after the star’s visit to Des Moines in October.
